Although they may not be seen at first glance, when the materials are low quality and/or manufacturing processes are not suitable, they can lead to problems of production and profitability in the short or medium term. We all want to make the best purchase and get the maximum profitability for our projects. Regarding solar modules, it can be difficult to detect low quality products since, apparently, all of them look the same. However, it is important not to make the purchase decision guided only by the lowest price.

We have got used to constantly seeing progress in photovoltaic solar technology, and improvements in its production process that result in a more competitive price. But, in the same way, there is a price war where the only strategy of some companies is to lower the ratio $/Wp at any cost, regardless of the final quality, real power and service life of the product.


Hidden defects


1. Mismatch | In the solar module’s cells and the strings in series

Discrepancies between cells of a same module and later installation in series of the strings of a solar plant, cause the total output power to be limited by cells with the lowest current values. For this reason, a correct classification, traceability and its correct testing at the factory are essential.



2. Hot Spot Effect | Accelerated degradation of solar module

They can be caused by partial shading, due to minor production flaws and wrong connection of cells and/or bypass diodes,
turning them into heat sinks.


3. Microcracks and other defects | Due to poor quality control processes

Typical examples: Partial/total microcracks, dirt, remains of pewter, etc.
