Photoelectric cells are devices based on the action of light radiation on certain materials, usually metals. The effect of this radiation is called the photovoltaic effect.

The photovoltaic effect is the effect that makes photovoltaic cells generate a current flow proportional to the luminous flux received.

The materials used for photovoltaic cells are semiconductors.

The influence of sunlight on the semiconductor (usually silicon), its photons provide the energy required for the valence electrons as they break the bonds and are free to move about the semiconductor.

The place left by the absence of the electron released is called hollow, and has positive electrical charge. These gaps are also shifted as the electron released is likely to fall into a hole next, thereby producing a movement of these holes. The fact that the electrons occupy the holes of other electrons is called recombination.

These free electrons and these holes created at points where there is light, tend to diffuse dark areas, thus losing its activity. However, both particles move in the same direction, do not produce electricity, and, sooner or later recombine restoring the broken link.

In solar cells the electric field is achieved by joining two regions of a silicon crystal that have been chemically treated differently.


One of the two regions, called n, has been doped (doped) with phosphorus.
The other region, called p, has been doped with boron.

When photons impinge on the top layer of the cell, some links are broken, then generating electron-hole pairs.

Photovoltaic solar energy, depending on its use and application, can be defined:

                - Grid-connected network: To sell the power generated.
                - Network Isolated Installations: Use the energy generated.
